YouTube with Flatscreen Quality

Soon YouTube will support high resolution video that we usually enjoy on flatscreen TVs. The High Definition (HD) mode of YouTube will allow you to watch videos in HD 1080p ('p' is for progressive scan, or resolution). That was YouTube's claim. You can also watch videos in 720p, although the resolution ultimately depends on the original source.

This year, YouTube has supported HD videos. However, the maximum output of YouTube videos is limited at 720p. This video-sharing site explains its upgrade on its blog, "With the increasing resolution quality of consumers' cameras, we want to ensure that YouTube is the best web-hosting to showcase your videos. For those who have big monitors and high processor computers, try switching to 1080p to gain the best experience from a full screen."

The uploaded videos are still limited to 10 minutes, but the maximum file size may be increased to above 2 GB. If you just uploaded a video at 1080p, then you don't have to re-upload because those videos wil automatically be recoded to be played at a higher resolution.

Because even the HD 720p could be quite heavy for a regular PC, then the 1080p is aimed for those with big monitors and fast computers. If your PC can't handle 1080p video clips, you can still have the 720p alternative.
